Symptom, Causes & Prevention |
Symptoms include pain in the legs, fatigue, heaviness,
aching, burning, throbbing, itching, cramping, and restlessness of the
leg. In advanced cases, varicose veins can lead to skin rash,
pigmentation changes, inflammation, ulceration, and bleeding. |
Causes |
Heredity, hormonal factors including puberty, pregnancy and
menopause. The use of birth control pills, estrogen and
progesterone affect the disease. Other factors that can accelerate
and aggravate the appearance of veins, beyond gravity and age, including
leg injury, obesity, lack of exercise, weight fluctuation, constriction
and prolonged sitting or standing. |
Prevention |
Exercise & walks. Avoid standing or sitting
motionless for long periods of time. Wearing support hose is
crucial. |
Vein Types |
Varicose Veins |
Varicose Veins are swollen and/or stretched veins, which
protrude in a rope like manner from the skin. Normal veins , by
virtue of one-way valves, channel oxygen-poor blood back to the heart
and lungs to become oxygen-rich. When a valve becomes defective it
allows blood flow to leak down and collect in the leg, resulting in
congestion and dilation of the vein.
Spider Veins |
Spider Veins properly name telangiectasias, are broken
capillaries that look like small red, spider, blue or purple web=like or
linear veins. They are less than 2mm in the diameter, can be flat
or raised, and appear on the surface of the skin. |
Reticular Veins |
Reticular Veins are small bluish-colored veins that carry
blood to the skin venules and therefore are larger. These veins
have thin walls and dilate with excessive venous pressure. When
this occurs, they become large enough to be unsightly, but are not
considered to be varicose veins. |
Corrective Measures |
Sclerotherapy |
Injections to treat varicose and spider veins |
Laser |
Used in the treatment of the small and medium size spider
veins or broken capillaries, as well as blue or purple veins on your leg
or face. |
Ambulatory Phlebectomy |
Removal of veins through tiny punctures so small that
sutures are not usually necessary. |
Elvs™
Procedure |
A minimally invasive alternative to surgical Stripping and
Closure™. A small catheter is inserted through a needle stick into
the vein. The vein is numbed and the laser energy heats and seals
the vein shut. |
Ligation and Stripping |
When the procedure is needed, it is performed at the
hospital and takes less than one hour. Patients are discharged in
two hours and my resume activities in 3 or 4 days. |
